El Lissitzky (1890–1941) was a Russian avant-garde artist and polemicist who used art to initiate social and political changes. His entire career was laced with the belief that the artist could be an agent for change, later summarized with his edict, “das zielbewußte Schaffen” (goal-oriented creation). This hooptie is based on his 1928 painting “Basic Calculus”—one of many designs that use colors and simple geometric shapes to make powerful political statements.  Lissitzky challenged many conventions of traditional art and greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements—his experiments with production techniques and stylistic devices would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design.
