SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg started his career in marine biology where he developed an idea for a comic book about the animal life living in tide pools. In 1997, while pitching the cartoon to Nickelodeon executives, Hillenburg donned a Hawaiian shirt, brought along an “underwater terrarium with models of the characters”, and Hawaiian music to set the theme. The cartoon would go on to become the highest-rated series ever to air on Nickelodeon. This hooptie is dedicated to Cristiana Powery—whose love for Spongebob would inspire our Arthritis Foundation cycling team to adopt him as our mascot.
