Written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, Back to the Future came to be after Gale mused upon whether he would have befriended his father if they attended school together. In an early script, the time machine was designed as a refrigerator but Zemeckis was concerned that kids would accidentally lock themselves in refrigerators. The DeLorean was chosen because its design made the gag about the family of farmers mistaking it for a flying saucer believable. Entertainment design icon Drew Struzan created the logo and poster for the movie, which is one of over 150 iconic poster designs over the past 40 years.
