Jorge Alderete is an Argentine illustrator based in Mexico City whose surrealist kitsch subject matter has led to numerous publications and exhibitions around the world. Alderete’s work features images of cultural garbage, 1950s science fiction movies, and psychotropic comics. “Corazon Latino” from 2001 is partly about life as a foreigner—in that contrary to Mexican culture—he did not perceive Mexican wrestling as a lower-class sport and sought to learn more about the wrestlers and the design of their masks. This piece became an icon for how advertising “should be” represented in Mexico.
