070: Joy Division

Joy Division

Joy Division was formed in Manchester, UK in 1976 during the first wave of punk rock. Their debut album Unknown Pleasures from 1979 has been ranked as one of the 50 coolest records of all time by Rolling Stone. The iconic album design was created by Peter Saville, who Joy Division approached with the idea of basing the album design on how radio waves render visually when printed. Saville reversed the waves in white on a black textured paper, and it’s been said that “The duo-chrome album cover speaks volumes. Its white on black lines reflects a pulse of power, a surge of bass, and raw angst. If the cover doesn’t draw you in, the music will.”
