Based on Japanese folktales in which people wander into forests to each magical mushrooms, Super Mario Brothers is about brothers Mario and Luigi as they travel through the Mushroom Kingdom in order to rescue Princess Toadstool from the evil Bowser. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1985, Super Mario Bros. became one of the greatest video games of all time—helping revive the video game industry after a devastating crash in 1983. Many people today can still sing the tune of the nearly four-decade-old game—a testament to the soundtrack that made music a centerpiece in future game design.
