Monopoly came to be in 1903 when an anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie created a game she hoped would explain the negative aspects of private monopolies. By 1935, the familiar board game had been bought by Parker Brothers who popularized the game. And now over 100-years later, the impact of Monopoly can be felt with phrases like “Get Out of Jail Free Card” and Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200” becoming widely used in popular culture.
