Since its debut in 1989, The Simpsons has gone on to become the longest-running sitcom in television history. The show’s direct influence on pop culture can be felt throughout the world and proved that animation could be for adults and still be commercially lucrative. Its impact has been so tangible that some of the show’s catchphrases and one-liners have crossed cultural borders and been adopted into the English language. Originally created as a reoccurring skit on the Tracy Ullman show, creator Matt Groening formulated his version of a dysfunctional middle-American family based on his own family members. The success of the Simpsons directly led to the creation of Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama and paved the way for countless other animated series that continues to influence American culture.
